10 Ways to identify fraudlent staff

10 Ways to identify fraudlent staff

Having carried out pre-employment screening on prospective employees does not mean that you will never suffer at the hands of a fraudster. Pre-employment screening will go a long way to ensuring that you recruit the right people but once employed you need to be vigilant for signs that an employee may have become a fraudster.  The following is a list of common indicators that an employee may be committing fraud against their employer.

  1. Marked and noticeable changes of personality
  2. Always late but for no obvious reason
  3. A reluctance to take leave
  4. Sudden and apparently unexplained change in lifestyle such as living beyond their means
  5. Having too close a relationship with a supplier or sub-contractor
  6. A supplier or sub-contractor insisting on dealing with the employee
  7. Employee has external business interests
  8. Employee has too much authority with too little controls in place
  9. New staff avoid working with the employee or they resign quickly
  10. Customers complain of missing statements and/or unrecognised transactions
